Course & Program

Qualification Level: BA (Hons) Degree

Musical Theatre trains you to be a versatile, imaginative and employable performer. Its embodied approach develops graduates who are adept at working in a variety of genres across the highest levels of the Musical Theatre industry, as well as preparing you for postgraduate study. Training in acting, singing and dancing are delivered with equal weighting, with the highest possible standards expected from our students in every discipline.
What You Will Study
Level 4 introduces students to essential core skills and is embedded primarily in technical training. We develop dance, movement, vocal, singing and acting skills both as individuals and as members of an ensemble. The principles of academic writing: research, analysis, and critique are initiated at this level.

Level 5 builds on previously acquired knowledge and aims to introduce elements of interpretation, analysis and performance as a soloist and within an ensemble. We develop your skills and understanding of all the techniques and approaches required to work within the Musical Theatre industry. You collaborate with industry professionals and peers in a range of different workshops and performance opportunities.

Level 6 focuses on performance and hones and combines the skills and knowledge previously learnt to create an employable and successful performer. Strategically selected projects and public performances encourage professional working relationships and the entrepreneurial capability vital for future employment. You also collaborate with a range of industry specialists.

Professional preparation includes invited practitioners and graduates sharing their knowledge and experience of the workplace. Your professional training is complemented by advice on developing your own unique product.

At the heart of this Musical Theatre programme are the essential practical and creative skills and rigorous theoretical enquiry that prepare you to become independent thinkers, self-motivated artists and freelance practitioners.

What You Will Study
Level 4 introduces the key practitioners and processes that underpin performer training. You develop devising, movement, vocal and acting skills for working effectively as members of an ensemble and as a solo performer. We initiate the principles of academic approaches of practice as research, analysis, and critique at this level.

Level 5 builds your knowledge of interpretation, analysis and text performance. As a performer/actor/creator you develop an understanding and application of a range of theatrical approaches, practitioners and dramaturgical choices to make meaningful and imaginative work. Critical theory develops your academic and cognitive skills and ongoing technical classes, acting for camera, solo performance training, expand your skills in preparation for level 6.

Level 6 is your professional practice year. You engage in professional projects, in which you collaborate with peers, industry practitioners and professional venues. You learn about professional and commercial practice, acquiring the skills to be self-starting entrepreneurial performance practitioners. You also hone your skills and knowledge for a range of employment scenarios.

Performances take place throughout the year in public venues, encouraging professional working relationships and networking skills vital for future employment. Professional preparation includes invited practitioners and graduates sharing their knowledge and experience of the workplace. Advice on developing an online presence, including the application of social media, complements your professional training.

Our full-time, three-year diploma course is a comprehensive training programme for students looking for a complete package to take them from student-in-training to working professional. It is aimed at those who have some previous experience of Theatre Arts and Performance or those who show potential and demonstrate a strong natural ability in performance.
What You Will Study
Course modules include: Vocal Techniques, Singing, Acting, Performance Skills, Jazz, Tap and Ballet, all with a Musical Theatre context. There are also modules on Professional Development Musical Theatre Repertoire, Theatrical Makeup, Technical Theatre, Theatre History and Industry Studies.

The diploma concludes with a London showcase and lots of support to take you into your professional career.

Qualification Level: Diploma Level 4

What You Will Study
Our full-time, one-year SQA Advanced Certificate Course is designed for any student we deem has enough potential to work at the highest level in the business, but doesn’t meet the age restrictions or academic criteria needed to join one of our Degree programmes.

You will complete your first year’s training with a recognised Level 4 qualification which will allow you to graduate onto one of the TBA Degree programmes for your remaining two years of your training.

This course is delivered in partnership with The MGA Academy of Performing Arts.

What You Will Study
Our full-time, one-year TBA Foundation Course is designed for any student we deem has enough potential to work at the highest level in the business, but whom we also believe would benefit from an introduction to all aspects of full-time training, to prepare them for the rigours of the TBA three-year, full time course to come.

Unlike most foundation courses across the country, TBA guarantees your training will not end after one year. An acceptance onto our foundation course is also an acceptance onto one of our three-year, full-time courses upon its successful completion!
