Reflection on professional practice is an empowering aspect of the student experience, and in the third year there is the option of a written dissertation or a practical research project.

In addition, there is the possibility of access to the PPA Agency, which has enviable industry links and may promote graduates into the Acting world with access to agents, casting directors and potential employers. Where possible, we encourage students to develop industry links via public performances, auditions, work-based learning opportunities, and the Showcase in London’s West End.

BA (Hons) Acting for Stage and Screen is validated by De Montfort University. To apply for this course you will need to have 96 UCAS points (new tariff) and be over the age of 18 by 01/09/2018.

In Acting you will be given a toolbox of approaches and exercises to help you to create a fully rounded, detailed and truthful performance on stage, screen, radio and related media. This will be achieved through practical exercises, improvisation, monologue and scene work.

You will be given the practical skills which will allow you to unlock meaning in text and to create a character. This will be predominantly based on the System devised by Constantin Stanislavski but will also take account of the refinements and additions to his approach made by Twentieth century practitioners such as Uta Hagen and Stanford Meisner amongst others.

You will learn how to be present on stage, how to be ‘in the moment’ and to be physically and vocally released. You will explore the practical skills required by a professional actor on stage and screen and learn how to analyse your performance in a critically self-aware and specific manner both on stage and on screen.

We will help you discover where your strengths and weaknesses lie, what courses and colleges best suit you and your goals as a performer beyond training. AUTUMN TERM We will be getting to know you and your skills as a performer. Most of your classes will be technique based to ensure you are laying the correct foundations across all disciplines. You will be streamed in some classes to allow that development to be assessed correctly. We will be researching and collating the most up to date information on all relevant courses available to you, including what is required from you at the audition point. This will follow through in your other classes to prepare you for auditions in the coming terms. As a year group you will be working closely together to undertake tasks and develop as a performer creatively and intellectually. SPRING TERM We will continue with your technique classes but the emphasis will shift to specific repertoire for the audition season, where you will work closely with your course leader and other members of staff to ensure you are fully prepared and are choosing the correct material to excel in each and every audition. SUMMER TERM Alongside your continued classes, we will prepare for your showcase. This will be a performance in our resident theatre – The Bellerby Studio Theatre for your friends and family. The showcase will include three musicals adapted to 20 minutes. The musicals will be chosen with the specific year group in mind to showcase everyone to their best and show your progression through your training throughout the year. This course, designed over 3 terms, is designed to enable students to achieve their potential as an actor at the start of their journey. In doing so it will give you the tools to continue your training in a three year degree or diploma course in the future. The students will be introduced to and explore a range of methods and techniques that will free the actor’s imagination, voice and physicality. Through working on both classical and contemporary texts the students will develop the beginnings of an acting technique encompassing both physical and psychological aspects of lifting the text off of the page and bringing a character to life. FIRST TERM In the first term you will work through and explore drama schools and their performance courses. You will look at each courses requirements, audition processes and course structures. This will enable you to make clear and concise choices as to which drama schools would be right for you and most likely successfully navigate the audition process. Through classical text classes, acting technique classes and presentation classes you will ultimately find and bring to a performance level, at least, 3 classical and three modern monologues which you will be able to use in drama school auditions. You will be given guidance in audition technique, casting and which monologues are suitable. In the first term you will also have classes in voice, improvisation, actors movement, actor’s dance, acting skills and physical skills. All of these disciplines are designed to free you as an actor physically and vocally and help to create a more holistic approach to your acting. SECOND TERM This will ultimately be you audition term, so the focus will be on making sure each student is completely prepared for each of their auditions. Classes will continue in voice, acting technique, actor’s movement and audition technique. However the focus on audition techniques will switch to looking forward towards students second or even third round auditions. Looking at group audition techniques, confidence, and your mental and physical stamina in later rounds of auditions, which can last up to two days. THIRD TERM Alongside your continued classes, we will prepare for your showcase. This will be a performance in our resident theatre – The Eve Lyons Studio Theatre, for your friends and family.
