Qualification Level: Foundation

The Foundation programme in Acting aims to nurture and develop skills and techniques for those who aspire to training within either a conservatoire or higher education environment in pursuit of a career within the creative industries. This is both an innovative and intensive programme led and taught by GSA’s highly skilled trained tutors and industry professionals.

Graduates of the Foundation Acting programme have been awarded places at; RADA, LAMDA, GSA, East 15, Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, Mountview, Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, Arts Ed, Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, Birmingham School of Acting, Rose Bruford, Drama Centre, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Manchester School of Theatre.

Our BA Acting course achieved 93.55 per cent overall satisfaction in the National Student Survey (NSS) 2019. We are ranked top three for drama and dance by the Guardian University Guide 2020.

Training to become an actor is an intensive process which requires curiosity, courage and commitment. At Guildford School of Acting, we’ll help you develop your imagination, range, skills and technique. You’ll learn how to prepare for rehearsal, how to rehearse and how to use independent and proactive processes to achieve your best work possible for stage and screen.

What you will study
Drawing on the teaching and practices of Stanislavsky and Lecoq, our BA Acting course will develop your technical skills – from singing to stage combat. You’ll learn important critical and evaluative skills, and develop your imagination through play, improvisation and scene work. You’ll also take screen acting classes and complete film and radio projects that allow you to explore the processes needed in today’s recorded media.

You’ll attend classes and workshops with guest speakers to develop your professional network and employment opportunities. As you come to the end of your course, you’ll complete your transition to professional performer with a final showcase presentation in a West End theatre with invited agents and industry guests.

Our BA Actor-Musician course is run by Guildford School of Acting (GSA), one of the most highly regarded theatre schools in the UK. You’ll be taught by industry-leading professionals, and join a vibrant community of talented individuals.

We’ll develop your combined talents as an actor and a musician, including the versatility to work professionally as an actor or actor-musician in a wide range of theatrical contexts.

What you will study
On our BA Actor-Musician course, you’ll develop performance skills in acting, musicianship, dance and singing, alongside essential critical and evaluative skills.

In your first year, you’ll strengthen core skills in acting, dance, singing and music. In your second year, you’ll work on texts as diverse as Shakespeare, Lloyd Webber, Sondheim, Chekhov and Ibsen, with musicianship skills integrated within your studies. In your third year, you’ll work on three main projects: a play, a musical and a devised piece, alongside a showcase for industry, performed in London.

By developing your skills as an actor-musician, you’ll be able to take advantage of the ever-growing demand for versatile professional performers who can combine superb acting ability with a high standard of musicianship.

The University operates a credit framework for all taught programmes based on a 15-credit tariff. Modules can be either 15, 30, 45 or 60 credits.

The Guildford School of Acting (GSA) delivers its provision across three teaching blocks, within the University of Surrey’s existing semester structure.

GSA’s MA Acting course focuses on practical actor training, provided through a series of project workshops and rehearsals supported by extensive classes in relevant technical skills.

Our intensive MA Acting course offers you practical actor training focusing on technical skills in acting, voice and movement. These support a range of rehearsal projects, screen acting projects and public performances. You’ll also take professional development workshops and classes in audition technique.

We keep our cohorts small to ensure you get personal attention and contact from our expert teachers, who have extensive first-hand experience in professional theatre in the UK and the US.

Our MA Theatre course allows you to study at your own pace through online learning, so you can pursue your passion for theatre and develop industry connections around your existing commitments.

You’ll actively engage with relevant concepts and explore the rich heritage of theatre from a critical and theoretical perspective. You’ll gain an understanding of theatrical practices and develop your ability to evaluate significant historical, political, social and ethical developments in theatre.

Our broad range of modules incorporates relevant topics such as Theories of Performance, The Greeks, Contemporary Theatre Making, Political Theatre, Shakespeare in Performance, and Musical Theatre. You’ll also complete an independent research project that will allow you to specialise in an area of particular interest to you.
