ALRA training covers acting for camera from the very first week. Students also study movement, voice, a wide range of acting techniques, text, stage combat, TV presenting, radio, dance, singing - in short, all of the elements required to work as a professional actor or director in today's industry.

ALRA currently offers BA (Hons), Foundation and Postgraduate Acting Courses and MA Directing courses.

Combining practical actor training with theoretical study and research methodologies, this vocational course aims to equip you to operate effectively in a highly competitive artistic industry.

The ALRA MA Professional Acting Course (15 months) is a full time actor training programme that has three taught terms followed by two performance terms; including a theatre production, recording a film and showcases/panels in both London and Manchester regardless of which campus you choose to study at. ALRA’s postgraduate courses focus on the skills and techniques needed for professional acting today.

This course includes most aspects of a Drama School BA (Hons) Acting course but is delivered at a fast-tracked pace. Students work individually and as an ensemble with projects in screen acting as well as radio and theatre acting, movement, voice and other vital techniques of the performing arts with opportunities for audition practice to a professional panel.

The ALRA MA Directing course is an innovative new programme which includes an international residency and individual industry mentors. Set within a cutting-edge location at ALRA North, a hive of creative activity and cultural development in the North West.

The aim of this course is to create graduates who will change the demographic of live theatre directors in this country. ALRA will recruit 4 – 6 student directors and pair them with innovative and excellent experiences that will act as a catalyst for their forthcoming career as artists in the live performance industry. ALRA Directors will have an insight into the craft of acting through working with the acting students and specialist tutors on their performance programmes which focus on body, voice and imagination.

Qualification Level: Foundation

ALRA offers a Foundation Diploma in Acting. The full time option gives students a real insight into conservatoire actor training and preparation for working in the industry. It is beneficial for those wishing to pursue professional training at a higher level.The course includes modules on: Acting, Voice, Movement, Acting for Camera and for Screen & TV performance. The course is one year full time comprising 21 contact hours per week over four days.

This innovative teaching course for performing arts professionals is designed for experienced artists or tutors who want to develop their teaching skills in a conservatoire setting. The course is a high-level, practical and vocational experience which offers a chance to work inside a drama school with student actors as well as offering placement opportunities in the industry. Focusing on the specifics of teaching in a conservatoire environment, this new course has been designed to meet the changing needs of the drama school sector and to create teaching practitioners who are equipped to challenge existing practice to engage in a critically reflective pedagogy and cultivate truly current modes of performer training. With a broad range of skills development and an ethos of creativity, this course will also develop a network of skilled professionals who will nurture the next generations of performance talent.

Qualification Level: MFA

The new MFA Linklater Teaching Practice (Voice and Theatre Arts) is a unique practice- based Masters Degree centred in Kristin Linklater’s methodology. Linklater is a world-leading expert in vocal technique for actors and performers of all disciplines. 

The MFA is rooted in Linklater’s approach to voice as fundamental to a whole system for actor training. A second emphasis in the two-year programme is Applied Theatre Arts, as developed by Augusto Boal through his ‘Theatre of the Oppressed’. A reimagined, pioneering training for Actor-Teachers ALRA believe that the highest purpose of theatre is to shed light on the lives we lead and to the shift perception towards potential transformation.
